Don't let dog days of summer get to your pets
The "dog days of summer" are upon us. The ancient Greeks and Romans watched the night skies for Sirius (the dog star) to appear in conjunction with the sun. This was the sign that the hottest days of the summer were near. This generally occurs between July and September. I can assure you that the dog days of summer are here. Both dogs and humans can only tolerate a few minutes of the heat.

Dog Life Jackets-Treat Your Dog Right
Does your dog go just about everywhere with you? Do you share your adventures with your dog? Is your dog your sailing partner? If so, make sure to keep your dog safe in and around the water with a dog life jacket.
While there are no regulations regarding dog life jackets, wouldn’t you feel better knowing your best canine friend was as protected in his dog life jacket as you are in your life jacket?
A dog life jacket is the perfect solution for the dog owner that has a pool, lives near the water or just visits the lake or the beach. A dog life jacket is easily visible, has high buoyancy and is designed to hold your dog’s head higher in the water thus making it easier for him to breathe and giving him more stamina. A dog life jacket keeps him safe in cold, choppy waters or fast currents. Swimming is tiring work even for a dog, so make sure they wear a dog life jacket.
Water therapy is a great way to exercise every part of your dog, especially if he has been injured. Deeper water therapy combined with a dog life jacket can help your dog regain his strength through exercising which will help your dog return as closely as possible to pre-trauma activity level. Water therapy is also a great way for overweight dogs to lose weight. Working out in deeper water with a dog life jacket is a less stressful way to exercise your dog and helps them to lose those unhealthy pounds.
So go ahead and take your dog to the lake or beach. Let him swim along side of you, but let him swim safely with a dog life jacket. Always remember the rules of water safety apply not only to you but to your dog. Dog life jackets save dogs’ lives.

Dog Coat and Dog Fur Maintenance
Your dog's fur is a very important aspect of your dogs life, keeping it clean and in good shape is a good way to keep your dog happy, healthy, and clean. If you don't keep your dogs fur in good shape it will only be a mater of time before tangles and knots appear in your dog's coat picking up insects, pests, and causing discomfort for your dog.
Different dogs have different types of fur and with so many cross breeds and different looking dogs, naming all the different types of fur would be impossible. There are many different types of dog fur, some will look after themselves more than others but the general rule is that a longer dog coat will normally tangle and know easier than others.
To maintain your dog's fur and keep it looking as it should, lots of grooming may be needed so this should be taken into account when buying a new dog. But grooming does not need to be a chore you have to do for your dog because grooming is proven to be a great bonding between owner and dog and creates trust and comfort for your dog making them a lot easier to train.
Step one is to get a good comb for your dog ensuring that there are no sharp edges and that your dog is comfortable with you using it without hurting him/her. Your vet or local pet shop many be able to help you and give you advice with choosing the correct comb but this will be a deciding point in whether your dog will enjoy you doing it or not.
After you have chosen your comb, grooming should happen often and you should do it thoroughly each time, ensuring all knots and angles are removed, if you haven't yet combed your dog's fur then it may be difficult to start so do a bit at a time to ensure you don't discourage your dog and make them not like the grooming process.
After the initial combing, the more often you groom your dog the easier it will be, leaving it for long periods of time is not advised because this means it is more likely to hurt your dog when it eventually does get done. If your dog is finding it tough going then maybe a dog bath is needed to make it easier to detangle and add to your dog furs health.

Yorkshire Terrier Dog Breed Description, History, Grooming, Health Issues and Living Conditions
Description: The Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog, which is in the toy dog class. This breed is 6-7 inches in height, and weighs approximately seven pounds. This breed has a life expectancy of 12-15 years. The Yorkshire terrier has a small head, that is flat on top, and they have a medium-sized muzzle, that is not long. Their teeth meet in a scissor or level bite, and can be undershot. They have a black nose. This breed has dark eyes, which are medium in size and not very prominent. Their eye rims are dark. The Yorkshire Terrier ears are small, erect and are V shaped, that are carried not to far apart. All the legs are straight, and we see round feet with black nails. In some countries, the tail is docked to a medium length, in countries where this is allowed. The Yorkshire Terrier coat is glossy, fine, and silky in texture. The hair on the body is moderately long and should be straight. The hair on the head is long and should be tied up with a bow, or parted in the middle and tied with two bows this allows the dog to see and eat easier. With the Yorkshire Terrier breed, the hair on the muzzle is very long. With the colouring puppies are born black and tan are normally dark body colour, this changes as they grow older. Coat colours come in steal blue and tan, with the body and tail being blue and the rest of the dog is tan.
History: This breed comes from Yorkshire in England and was created by the working man, who wanted a dog that could catch the terrible rats and mice infected the mills and mine shafts. The Yorkshire terrier is not an old breed and came into existence in the 19th century. It is believed it came in part from Scotland’s with the migrating workers, and possibly in its genetic makeup, is the Paisley terrier, Skye Terrier, Dandie Dinmont, Manchester Terrier, Maltese, and the Scottish Terriers, but not the ones we see today. Early in its history, any shape of terrier having a long coat with the blue and tan colouring was classed as a Yorkshire terrier. A lady called Mary Ann Foster, who showed Yorkshire Terrier dogs throughout Great Britain, helped define the type of the Yorkshire terrier. The Yorkshire Terrier breed was also used in ratting competitions; this was a popular sport of the time. This dog, with selective breeding, has gradually miniaturized this breed. As they became smaller the ladies found them to be a fashion extension as they can be neatly be carried in a handbag. The Yorkshire Terrier breed is now a companion dog. This dog was first recognized by the AKC in 1885. The earliest records of the Yorkshire terrier born in the United States are in 1872.
Temperament: The Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog, that is big on personality. Keeping the terrier qualities, this dog enjoys adventures and has lots of energy. This is an exceptionally brave dog and is very clever. The Yorkshire terrier is very affectionate, with their owners, and makes a great companion. Problems can arise if the owner is not the pack leader here we see a dog that becomes aggressive towards strange dogs and small animals, and may also become yappy. The Yorkshire Terrier dog, like all dogs, needs the owner to be the leader. This dog is better with older children, that can show leadership skills and treat the dog as the dog. Small dog syndrome in Yorkshire terriers is to be avoided, as this will make the dog unhappy, and also the owner. If the Yorkshire terrier starts to develop jealousy or becomes over demanding of human attention, then it is wise to think how you are treating the dog to put back the right balance. The Yorkshire terrier is easy to train but can be slightly stubborn, as with all terriers. This breed can be difficult to potty train. The Yorkshire terrier makes an excellent watchdog. The biggest problem Yorkshire terriers can have is if the owner thinks and treats them as a human baby, due to their size. The Yorkshire terrier is a sweet little dog, when the owner understands leadership skills that are gentle. Although the Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog they will still require walking daily. This will help burn up their energy, as this breed has lots to burn off. Dogs that do not have daily walks are more likely to have behavioral problems. A sure sign that your Yorkshire terrier may require more walks is if they are spinning around the house as fast as a bullet. Remember this dog is trainable and simple commands such as heel when out walking are needed. This dog will enjoy a good run in a safe open area off the lead.
Health issues: Some of the Yorkshire Terrier breed are prone to slipped stifle, bronchitis, early tooth decay, delicate digestion, herniated disks, which can course paralysis. This breed can get fractures easily and eye infections can be quite common.
Grooming: Daily grooming is needed with the Yorkshire terrier, due to their silky coat. They have a topknot which is usually tied up. Family pets that are not for showing tend to have their pet coat cut shorter for manageability. Show dogs need hours of care for the show ring and this can be learnt. The Yorkshire Terrier dog will benefit from daily tooth care, cleaning these from an early age will help your pet to know that it is part of the routine.
Living conditions: The Yorkshire terrier is good for apartment life, although this is an active indoor dog, providing they have good daily walks they can manage without a garden.

Dog Ear infections are quite common as this condition affects about 20% of our dogs
Dog Ear infections are quite common as this condition affects about 20% of our dogs either regularly or sporadically, and these infections can affect the outer part of the ear, known as the canal, the middle of the ear, or the inner most part of the ear.
The term most used to describe the inflammation of the outer ear is otitis externa.
These infections can be chronic conditions that linger on, especially external ear infections, or the can happen very suddenly.
Both of these conditions can cause damage to ear canal lining, which will than produce excessive amounts of ear wax in your dog ears, which in turn will then cause thickening of the lining, and finally results in the ear canal becoming scarred.
In the worst of scenarios of these ear infections, once calcification of the ear canal happens, the only resolution will be to have it corrected by ear surgery.
These infections can make your pet fell down right miserable.
It hurts.
Some of the signs of infections that your dog show is they will start to shake their head a lot as they are actually trying to get the debris and fluid out. They will constantly scratch their ears, and the ears will become inflamed and start to produce an offensive odor from the bacteria build up.
These infections also will cause a discharge in the ear of fluid and even a puss like discharge, and because of the constant pain your pet is in, their behavior will change and they may start to whine, become irritable, and may actually become depressed as well.
So what actually causes these infections and what is the biggest cause?
Although parasites can sometimes be the cause of these infections such as ear mites, ear mites are very rare in dogs but are the number one cause of cat's ear infections. Bacteria and yeast cells, as well as foreign organisms that get into your dogs ears are the top causes of these infections.
Yeast infection will be caused by a build of ear wax in your dog, while foreign substances can enter into your dogs ears by swimming, rolling on the grass that may be infected with a bacteria (or parasite), and finally too much ear cleaning of your dogs ears can actually put the ears at risk for infection.
Humid climates also make a fertile breeding ground for these infections.
There are other conditions that can put your dog at risk for ear infections as well, such as endocrine diseases like hypothyroidism, and conditions that can weaken your dog's immune systems, such as respiratory conditions.
Allergies in dogs, unlike or almost opposite of human allergies, actually put your dogs more at risk than dogs without allergies, because they cause the ears to become inflamed and this makes the ears naturally heat up, producing the breeding ground for yeast and bacteria, and also lays the ground for chronic forms of ear infections.
Dogs that are more sensitive to allergies, thus, will also be more susceptible to ear infections. Some of these breeds include Poodles, Cocker Spaniels, Retrievers (especially Labrador’s), and Schnauzers.
Dalmatians and Greyhounds, because of their natural ear weaknesses and proneness to becoming deaf, are also more at risk.
Some breeds of dogs actually have ears that by nature become perfect breeding grounds because of their skin or the glands located in their ear canals such as Beagles, Basset Hounds, Springer Spaniels, and Labradors.
Finally, there are breeds that just flat out have a lot of natural hair in their ears which restricts the airflow into their ears, making them a lot more at risk. These breeds include Poodles, Shih Tzus, Pekingese, and Lhasa Apsos.
These infections can also be caused by plant awns, commonly known as stick-tights. These substances can stick to your pet's fur and eventually find their way into the ears. Once there, they will cause trauma to the ear canal.
If you frequent wooded areas, always check your pet's ears after the visit.
Diagnosing the actual cause of these infections in your dog is best left to your Veterinarian. They can take cotton swab samples and make the proper diagnosis and than once made, can suggest the proper treatment.
The treatment, of course will depend on the cause of the infection, and than secondary conditions that may be the cause.
Antibiotics are used for most of the bacterial infections, and antifungal agents are generally used for the yeast infections. System diseases that cause ear infections, such as a hormone problems or any type of an allergy, will have to be treated with programs that will treat all of the symptoms, not just the ear infections.
Vitamin C supplements, especially liquid forms because of the superior absorption, are effective in helping to reduce the inflammation that these infections will cause.
There are several varying opinions on the best way to clean your dog's ears. But there is one definite way not to; do not use just plain water to clean your dogs ears. That will only add to the wax problem.
Cleaning your pets ears with a mixture of vinegar and water is recommended, and there are several herbal remedies that you could try including Calendula, a antifungal with very good healing agents, organic grape, a very strong antibiotic and antibacterial herb, and Mullein and Garlic, both of which have varying forms of antibody and antiviral qualities.
Your dog depends of your observations and help to help them from getting this painful condition.

Liquid Vitamins & Minerals for Humans & Pets

I am an avid lover of pets and my wife and I have had several pets throughout our years. We are especially fond of dogs, and we have a 12 year old Dalmatian (our 3rd) and a “mutt” that we rescued when someone threw him away to die in a vacant field.
He found us, nearly starved to death, and weighed about 2 pounds.
After severe bouts of mange and severe dehydration, and over 1,000.00 in veterinarian bills, we saved the little guys life, and he is one of the best, if not the best, dogs we have ever had and today is a muscular, fit, and firm 70 pound best friend.
After finishing my MBA, which at middle age was not easy, I decided to keep the research work ethics that I acquired, and devote about two hours each night in understanding the health benefits of supplementation for both humans and pets and how they might strengthen our, as well as our pets, immune system in a pre-emptive approach to health rather than a reactionary approach.
Both of my daughters are avid cat lovers, and asked me to help them with health concerns and challenges with their cats.
I am not a veterinarian nor claim to be, just a lover of pets that loves to research and pass on some knowledge that might be helpful, or at least stimulating to the thought process
Are Small Dogs Good With Kids?
Answer: No, but it depends.
Are small dogs good with kids? Most people canât seem to come to a consensus about this question. People who regularly place rescue dogs with adoptive families do not believe that children are good for small dogs. On the other hand, some people believe that some small dogs are good with kids. Both points are valid. Letâs discuss each opinion separately.
The people who believe that small dogs are not suitable for kids see it from the small dog’s perspective. These people believe that a child could easily harm a small dog by acting like the dog is a toy and not a breathing and living creature. Small dogs can attack a child just as much as large dogs can. As far as the safety of the child is concerned, the injuries from small dogs would likely be minor compared to the possible injuries caused by larger dogs.
Some parents believe that their child is mature enough and âdog friendlyâ enough to enjoy the company of a small dog. Most of the time, these parents are wrong. Breeders and adoption agencies will often refuse families with children younger than seven or eight years of age. They do not think that it is in the best interest of the dog, which could easily be traumatized by living with small children. Â
People believe small dogs are safe for children because they are little. Many children do not realize their own power and strength as they are still growing up. They are simply not aware of what little effort it takes on their part to accidentally and unintentionally kill a small dog.
On the other hand, some people agree that certain breeds of small dogs are safe for children. Such small dog breeds include: beagles, terriers and collies. These dogs normally behave just fine around children and do not pose any kind of threat. However, you should avoid the biggest small dogs and toy breeds such as Chihuahuas for the sake of the dog.Â
In order to keep both child and small dog safe, you must monitor both the child and the dog at all times. If you canât watch them both, place the dog in a safe room or in a crate away from the child. With proper behavioral training and enough exercise, a small dog can learn to adapt and fit in with the family. Therefore, itâs possible for a small dog to be good with kids.
A note of caution: parents must warn their children to never put their face in front of a dog. Dogs can get spooked and snap, which could result in severe medical injuries, no matter how big or small the dog is. Small dogs are not typically good for kids in the long run and they are not the smartest choice for both the dogâs and childâs safety. It is best to research all of your options first and determine why you really want a small dog as opposed to a big dog. Perhaps you shouldnât get a dog at allâ¦?

I have a little yorkie shes a teacup/toy (i don’t want any comments about there being no such thing etc..) and its really hard to find colors, clothes and harnesses for her. I live in the UK. If you know of any sites/shops that sell teacup/xxs dog clothes and accessories that would be great

Have you tried searching on ebay? Wilkinsons do some really cute, little harnesses that might fit her, you could always put her in a cat harness if dog ones are too small. But why on earth would you want to put clothes on a dog, its practically cruelty to animals. Please dont tell me you are one of those people who treat their dogs like babies. It makes me sick when I see people walking round with a dog wearing nappies, clothes and in a pram, I actually banned someone from bringing one into the shop I work in. No dogs means no dogs whether they are in a pram or not and she told me it was a child to her. Didnt seem to register when I explained that to her its a child and to everyone else it is a fat, poorly treated animal.
