Can Dogs Really Be Hypoallergenic?

Approximately 10% of the United States population suffers from pet allergies. As much as 25% of U. S. residents suffer from asthma brought on by allergies. Allergic reactions can include itchy, watery eyes, sneezing or congestion.  People with asthma can have  difficulty breathing and may even  suffer a severe asthma attack.  If you and your family are dog lovers, but have a member of the household with pet allergies, there is a good chance you can find a dog that everyone can live with.

It is important to understand exactly what causes an allergic reaction in some people. You may think it is just the dog’s fur, but allergens are produced by a  protein found in a dog’s  dander, which is skin cells, saliva, and even urine. The allergens can end up on everything in your house. Naturally , if you have a dog with a long coat, or that sheds frequently, these allergens will be almost impossible to eliminate. There are many dog breeds or cross breeds that do not shed, or shed less often. This does not mean they don’t produce allergens. There is no dog that is truly allergen free.

Keep in mind that everyone will have a different reaction to certain allergens. This means that, while you don’t have an allergic reaction to your poodle, you may be terribly allergic to your friend’s Mexican Hairless. Here is a list of some of the dog breeds or cross breeds that have been determined to be suitable for people with pet allergies:

Affenpinscher – doesn’t shed

Bedlington terrier – doesn’t shed

Bichon Frise’ – does not shed, but hair will come out when brushed.

Boston Terrier – short hair and  minimum dander.

Chinese Crested – very little hair, does not shed much but still produces saliva and dander.

Dandie Dinmont Terrier – doesn’t shed

Greyhound and Italian Greyhound - short, single coat

Malteses – doesn’t shed

Poodles – doesn’t shed, low dander

Portugese Water Dog – (the Obama’s dog) – doesn’t shed

Yorkshire Terrier – doesn’t shed, low dander

This is only a partial list of dogs considered to be hypoallergenic. There are some other, less common breeds, like the Puli and Samoyed. If you want a cross or mixed breed, you have to make sure the pup inherited the no shed coat or low dander characteristic. A Goldendoodle, a Golden retriever, Poodle mix can be hypoallergenic if he inherits the coat from the Poodle. If the pup inherits his coat from the Golden retriever, he will be a problem for allergy sufferers. It’s best to be able to visit a breeder and spend time around the dogs to see how you or your family member will react. This will prevent you from getting attached to a dog you can’t live with.

Another thing to consider when looking for a new addition to your family is, the size of the dog. A smaller dog will produce less, hair, saliva, dander and urine than a big dog. No matter what type of dog you choose, some common sense things to do to keep allergens to a minimum include, regular bathing or grooming of your pooch, keeping the dog off the furniture and beds, and vacuuming every day with a cleaner with a hepa filter. With a little research and armed with some knowledge of how pet allergies work, you should be able to find the perfect pup for your family.

Jolly Rancher (1994-2009) - An old dog who wouldn't give up

Jolly Rancher (1994-2009) – An old dog who wouldn’t give up

POSTSCRIPT: Jolly’s 3-1/2-year long battle with cancer ended today (May 16, 2009). About ten days ago he began a rapid decline, and by the time we took him to vet this morning, he could no longer stand. A fighter until the very end, Jolly is survived by a loving family and his two little "sisters," Jelly Bean and Bella Grace. He was a great dog and companion.

If you are reading this, you probably are a dog lover. After Jolly was diagnosed with cancer, we used to take him over to KFC several times a week as he had a definite fondness for their Chicken Snacker sandwich. We always ordered his Snacker plain, but on one visit the sandwich was made with lettuce and mayo. When I tried to send it back, I was told they would make me a plain Snacker and that I should give the other one to Jolly! I didn’t have it in me to tell the cashier the original order WAS for Jolly! Needless to say, he enjoyed his two "snacks" on that trip! So if you’d like to pay tribute to JR, put Fido in the car, head to the nearest KFC, and buy your dog a Chicken Snacker. I know Jolly would get a kick out of it, and I’m certain KFC wouldn’t mind the extra business!

Central Illinois (except Springfield)
: Central Illinois (except Springfield): Photos relating to the middle section of the "Land of Lincoln" (except for the Capital City of Springfield) may be found in this collection. Every city and town I’ve photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "counrtyside") photographs are grouped by county.

Springfield, Illinois
: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds (and past State Fairs), and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Also in the Lincoln "All About Abe" (Set) are a few Lincoln sites not located in Springfield.

Beyond Central Illinois
: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I’ve put together:

Automobile Photographs
: This is a very large collection of images whose primary, but not exclusive, focus is on American automotive classics. Images are organized by decade, by manufacturer, and by topics (such as convertibles, station wagons, muscle cars, etc.)

Barbers & Barber Shops
: Traditional barbers and barber shops are on the endangered species list. But there are still plenty to be found if you go looking for them.

Almost Everything Else. Check It Out!!!
: Included topics range from man’s first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.

How do you train a dog thats 7 months old to stop jumping on people.?

Question by Abel C: How do you train a dog thats 7 months old to stop jumping on people.?

I have a 7 month old terrier mix rescue dog. He is neutered and is very playful. Its when he gets all excited that he starts to jump on me and family. What can I do to prevent this from happening. He is pottey trained knows how to sit and gives the paw if thats any help.

Best answer:

Answer by ?
I used my knee (without hurting him of course). When he jumped, I put my knee up & said no. Another way is to get an old soda can; fill with a few rocks and a few pennies and duct tape it closed. When he jumps , shake the can and say no. Another thing that helps is making him sit before getting pet..especially as new people enter the house.

Answer by RipplinRunJackRussells
Consistency, Consistency, Consistency.

If your dog jumps up on you turn your back and ignore him. Even walk away. Practice when you first come home because that’s when they get most crazy. When he calms down, or even sits down THEN he gets attention from you.

What he is trying to do is get your attention when he jumps on you. If you completely ignore him (don’t even say “no”, just act like he is not even their) he will eventually give up. Then he will realize that is he calms down he finally gets what he wants… your affection.

If you are consistent he will figure it out 10 times faster. Biggest mistake people make when training is not staying on top of things. If you pet him or show him any attention (even pushing him off) you will have to keep going twice as long next time. It also confuses the dog when you are inconsistent.

Answer by LaraCgurl
When it starts jumping turn your back to them and fold your arms and wait.. then when they stop praise tthem or sit down. Repeat this untill they stop tell everyone tto do this

Answer by Peter L
An innate canine impulse, jumping up serves two purposes for dogs: it’s a way to show excitement, and it allows for an up close and personal sniff of scent glands in the human face. Combine the two–your pup’s excited you’re home from work and craves a whiff of your natural aroma–and the result is one jumpy dog.

Here’s how to stop your dog from jumping on people http://tinyurl.com/5ov3wb

Trying to use home remedies and letting the infection go without proper treatment will ultimately make things worse. Take the dog to a veterinarian where they can identify what kind of infection it is, and can give you medication to treat it.

Answer by K-Dawg
Here’s a top recipe for you to follow:

- Put lead on dog
- Pop dog in car
- Drive car to vet
- Get an educated diagnosis
- Follow vets advise re treatment
- Dog will recover and be happy!

Answer by BeanBelly
For any infection, it’s *essential* to allow your dog to see a vet in person.

…And take the poor girl quickly; ear infections are painful and can progress to more serious conditions– especially if it’s already “really bad.”

Answer by Maxi
Make sure you have your dogs ears checked first before using this by the vet to be certain that the ear drum is NOT ruptured, as there could be the risk of irreversible deafness or loss of equilibrium. Your vet can rule out the presence of tumors or foreign bodies such as foxtails.
